Something magical happens when you enter the world of Disney.
My daughter and I saw the Disney Princesses on Ice “Wishes Come True Show” at Nassau Coliseum, which transformed into a petite princess paradise.
From the Ariel or Tinkerbell lights ($20!!!) and light up tiaras for sale to the legions of young girls dressed in full on Petite Disney Princess Regalia, awaiting to check out the Princess Exhibits outside the theater, and bopping and dancing in their seats, you can’t help but smile.
As the lights go down and the spotlight captures Tinkerbell, who like every classic Disney Movie, flutters about waving her wand and Pixie dust, you turn into a little princess yourself. TINK!! TINK!!
My daughter was enamored, even on the Princesses she hasn’t yet been formally acquainted with, like Jasmine, Snow White and Mulan (yes, we have catching up to do) but especially with her favorite, Ariel.
Your soul does indeed fill up with notions of how easy it is to find your true love and how you can thwart any evil or overcome any nemesis to make your wishes come true.
You forget for a moment that you are watching scantily clad girls freezing on ice trying to catch a man, that the super evil characters Ursula and the Witch from Sleeping Beauty are nightmare legends, that you and your daughter may need some serious therapy later on with her suspension of disbelief issues, and that the handful of men in the house are likely reluctant dads, grandpas, brothers (well, they probably liked the Princes and dragon) and I hate to say it, but probably a few pedophiles.
The show covers “your favorite Disney Princesses” and if your daughter’s list includes, Jasmine, Ariel, Belle, Mulan, Aurora and Cinderella, then you’re in for a treat. Tinkerbell signals the set changes and each set is a mini-Disney show with what sounds like it is directly from the original soundtrack from the films.
The sets are definitely abridged versions of the stories and I had to ask my friends if I missed something because for the “Beauty and the Beast” segment, they spent a lot of time with Belle, the candlestick and silverware but I didn’t spot the Beast? Yet at the end when all the (spoiler alert!) Princesses are skating the finale with their true loves, Belle is skating with her prince too.
A few skaters stumbled but that didn’t detract from the spectacle. Highlights include (spoiler alert!) the shipmen aboard Prince Eric’s Ship (“Little Mermaid”) doing some tricks and flips, the evil’s witch’s transformation into a super scary dragon which Prince Phillip vests (“Sleeping Beauty”) and the show stopping Cinderella making a very grand entrance in her gilded carriage.
The show is a great group experience for your little princess and her court. Don’t be surprised later on when she wants to make a Cinderella-esque style entrance to her sweet sixteen!
Next Shows are Jan 21 – 23rd at Madison Square Garden.
